The Whitecliffs Talking Newspaper provides free weekly cassettes to anybody
who finds it difficult to read newsprint. Each week a skilled team of
volunteers, reads selected articles of new, events and essential information
from the local newspapers - East Kent Mercury, Dover Mercury and Dover
Express. Two cassettes are included in the post free bag which is sent
out weekly to visually impaired listeners. All you need to listen to the
tape is a normal cassette player...
The cassette contains: -
Local news
Local events for the coming week
Late opening chemists and other local information
Letters to the editors
Sports results
It also includes interviews with interesting people from
all walks of life, and articles from country and other magazines. The
cassette is recorded in a dedicated studio in Deal, by members of the
Whitecliffs Talking Newspaper volunteer team of readers, editors and recording
engineers. The finished article is then sent to the Kent Association for
the Blind in Maidstone where it is duplicated. Around 300 people currently
receive the tapes.
The second cassette entitled the Talking Magazine is produced by different
teams of people around Kent each week and includes a wide selection of
stories, serials and interviews.
